Book Cruel King: A Dark New Adult Romance (Royal Elite) Review :

I LOVED this book. It’s full of stuff that I wouldn’t turn a blind eye to in reality, but it was a PERFECTLY done story. Levi, the cruel king, well yeah he’s cruel. And possessive. His possessiveness toward Astrid never faltered and I was kinda okay with that. He had a couple of truly dickish moments that were more than a bit of emotional whiplash, but overall I absolutely loved his character. Astrid was an amazing character, and I LOVED that her best friend is a boy. It seemed like it fit her personality perfectly, and it was refreshing that he was a male friend who truly didn’t want a little something extra from her. I loved Astrid’s attitude, respect for herself, and the fact that even with everything brewing between her and Levi she held her own. This was definitely a 5/5 star read for me...The heat level is off the charts smoking hot. This is one of my favorite tropes. There was the addition of a couple of very intriguing and mysterious plot points. And it was all done so, so well.So yeah, if you’re into this trope and are okay with some possible triggers, then definitely check it out.
The ridiculous analogies about chess made next to no sense. I don’t read romance, dark or otherwise, to read about chess. But that was the least of the issues I found in this book. The grammar was atrocious! Words missing, nearly half of the words used incorrectly, and I don’t know if this author is British but a lot of the slang was not correct either.Let’s not forget the overwhelming immaturity of these characters. It wasn’t until 46% of the the way in that the MMC started actually sounding like he was interested in the FMC. Before that he was just a punk rich kid with an attitude problem and orphan syndrome. Smh. I don’t care for mind games, especially from teenagers because they usually don’t make sense.Anyway, the conflicts were over drawn out. The parents behaviors were really not excusable with lame things like “the ends justify the means”, or an “I’m sorry”. So I’m not thrilled that one of them got there own book. Most of the side characters read like the same kind of person so they are totally forgettable. Not sure why there are so many following stories about these same forgettable characters. Aiden was mildly interesting in that I want his behavior explained but he was too dry to really want for him to get an HEA.Lastly, what were all these characters angry about? All I got was a lot of glaring and hate sex from nearly everyone in the book. If I had my life so comfortably set up for me I’d be in tears I’d be so grateful! I just felt a vast disconnect between me as the reader and the characters and plot on the page. Not anything to relate to. As far as bully romance, it took too long for the romance to start between them. Then when it did I just wanted to have the secrets revealed so I could finish this long winded story. It’s a basic story at best. Not sure what all the hype was about.
