Not sure how this installment rates five stars from anyone.1st: How is the main character a member of any law enforcement office. She wouldn't be hired in 2000 much less forty years later. The main character was habitually raped and beaten. Documented. Claims no memory of events. Chronic runway. Punches a social worker. Documented. Makes no friends. Has no social skills. Documented. So when the main character applies to the police academy apparently there's no background check whatsoever. References? No friends. Who writes her character reference. According to the author not one kind or caring adult ever assisted or helped her. With the main character 's background law enforcement can't wait to hire this walking time bomb.2nd: According to the author the main character taught herself to read. No books. No educational toys and no adults providing her abc's. Per the author the main character hates school. Still she manages to ace all her police exams.3rd: The main character spends a lot of time curled up in a ball. However, at around eight years the starving , weak, malnourished 40 pound child kills an adult male with one blow using a dull paring knife. What's truly interesting is that with her 'hands slick with blood' she doesn't cut her self once or lose her grip on the knife.The main character and her murdering thug spouse are soul mates. They truly are. They are both narcissistic, self absorbed, heartless individuals. As with all rape victims the main character enjoys being sexually assaulted by her spouse. When she has a dream about her brutal rape she begs for sex. As all victims of sexual assault do.This is fantasy. Not well written fantasy. Not well researched, logical or reasoned fantasy. It's just the author throwing words at the computer screen and hoping no one notices. Of course, she does seem to expect a big pay day for this nonsense. I have read all of the Death Series and can't wait for the next book to be released. No spoilers here. If you like a well written mystery that has a strong female character this is for you. The series has sex that is quite awesome to read between Eve and Roarke!! The mystery is always well developed and when I start a book I can t put it down until I finish it. I have never been disappointed in any of the books in this series. The story travels at a good pace and I am always a little shocked at the guilty party but its a heck of a ride from beginning to end.
